The ideal DPS: The person with day‑to‑day control of alcohol sales at that specific venue—usually the general/store/bar manager or operations lead. They must be 18+ and hold a Personal Licence. Why them: They set and enforce training, age‑verification and incident/refusal logs, ensure licence conditions are followed, and liaise with police/council. They should be regularly on site (or closely involved), empowered to make decisions, and easily contactable. Avoid naming: Absentee owners, junior staff without authority, contractors, or someone spread too thin across many sites. One per premises: Only one DPS can be named on a Premises Licence at a time. If your DPS leaves, submit a vary DPS application (you can request immediate effect to keep trading). Exceptions: Club Premises Certificates don’t require a DPS; community premises can apply to disapply the DPS requirement; TENs for one‑off events do not need a DPS.
